Dignity Index Global (D.I.G.) is committed to increasing the safety of women within one generation, to prevent and end gender-based violence. Grounded in international human rights and labour standards, we equip cities, industries, and individuals to design, measure, and practice safety as an inherent right to dignity.
Dignity is Like Breath
We don't think about breathing. It comes naturally, without effort or thought. But the moment breathing becomes difficult, we pay immediate attention because we know that we cannot live without it.
Dignity works the same way. We don't think about it daily because it is inherent to us. We feel it not in its presence, but in its absence, and that absence compromises our safety. It may begin with a subtle comment that makes us feel smaller: the invisibility, the exclusion, the dismissal. And we know, viscerally, when someone treats us as less than fully human.
This is where it begins. And it does not stay subtle. It escalates from comment to harassment, from exclusion to harm, from violence to death.
Safety and dignity are inseparable. You cannot have one without the other.
Safety is the condition that allows dignity to breathe: the environment, the system, the accountability that keeps dignity from being slowly suffocated. Where safety is absent, dignity is already under threat. And where dignity is denied, no one is truly safe.
Closing the Gap
Enormous energy goes into addressing gender-based violence against women and this work is deeply necessary. But confronting violence is not the same as creating safety.
Despite decades of political commitments and estimated $410 million invested annually in gender-based violence, safety for women remains elusive. At best, harm is temporarily interrupted.
